<p>In this place the trail has to be quite steep to allow a successful line ahead. A few metres of rider challenge can make the next kilometer of trail successful and sustainable, rather than doomed to erosion and excessive maintenance</p>

<p>Flagging trail routes can be challenging depending on terrain and sight lines. Tape colour can make a difference</p>

<p>Using a clinometer (inclinometer) an old, closed trail measures a grade of 38%, straight-down-the-falline where it intersects a new trail</p>

<p>In rocky areas trapping silt can smooth the tread. Logs on the outslope can act as silt traps while water flows out through stone fill. In this spot, large springs deliver water free of silt to the trail and a subtle drain is still required

<p>Rolling grade dips in a very wet area capture water flowing from above and below the surface but keep the substantial water flow thin and slow, avoiding unnecessary erosion</p>
