Skills Area

Thursday, 08-Nov 2012 @ 10:05pm

Word is that the Gold Coast City Council are thinking about a skills area near the scout hall at the velodrome.  Hopefully it goes ahead as the fun potential for all riders and especially kids is high in a good skills area.

The following pics are from Lake Crackenback Resort which is half way between the MTB (and snow skiing) hubs of Jindabyne and Thredbo in the NSW Snowy Mountains. The skills area is just inside the gate and the only thing that distracts you from it is the view.  The builders are passionate and there is a superb 25km trail system that takes in all the scenery, including the Thredbo River, the mountains and the local critters like wombat, roos, wallabies, all sorts of birds (the magpies were particularly friendly) and trout.

The pictures start with the signs and then the beginner area and then the higher level features and finally the flow tracks leading to the pump track.  There is a vertical drop of about 8m from the top of the rocky knoll to the pump track.  Lots of little link and skinny trails join feature to feature.  There are ladders, rocks, stumps, berms, tight techy rock turns and the ability to climb the rocky knob in any direction (really hard actually).  Add the birds picking around and the sun and the "Alpine Larder" 200m down the road and you have a day out to remember.

How much would we like one of these parks in Nerang?  Guess how many kids would want to come ride it and then the trail system as well?  How would the acceptance of technical trail features in the park influence our ability to be creative on the QPWS trail system?  Time will tell...
