Pete's Trail below North Street Fire Road

Saturday, 24-Nov 2012 @ 11:32pm

Pete's is the big project right now.  We would like to see it legalised ASAP, but we also want it to be a great trail; befitting of the man himself.  Work below the upper switchback was started yesterday and continued today.  The trail's character is starting to show.

First though, pictures of the upper switchback in better light.

Here are some pics of progress today starting from the exit of the top turn going downhill.  More work to be done here yet.

Next the downed trees.  Some serious saw work, plus manufacturing a mound of stones has created a fun line.  The raw materials

and what we did with them.

Rocks piled and soil added to create a roller.  Reverse grade dips for drainage and obstructions removed.  None of this is complete yet.  Tamping has not really started.

We follow a general rule of timber near the trail, but rock under it for durability and stability.  Most builders use fallen trees for log-overs, rather than cut them out.  They don't last well in our climate and make for future repair work.  Trees fall across trails all the time, so for those who love log-overs, then in time there will be some here too, but they will be on solid trail.

As we move down this section of trail we plan to add more rollers and dips.  Where the lower part of the trail goes left and right, this section will go up and down!

and yes, the fallen tree will become the A line kicker.  If we can't come with a landing tranny, it could be 6m to flat, but hey - throw yourselves at it boys (lol).
