Some jobs on upper Pete's

Saturday, 12-Jan 2013 @ 10:31pm

Yesterday volunteers all-but finished the link between upper Pete's and the North street Fire Road.  Also, a lot of fill was added to a deeply-eroded bit of old Pete's, just below where the trail will be closed.  Hopefully it will assist recovery after closure.

Today we worked uphill from there, renovating areas in need of love.  Here are some pics.  Before and after versions of the top sections come at the end, but I have not included before pics lower down.

We started above this combination of tight bends and large rock and root pile going past the tree

So drains were added above the tight turns

Next this section where water was running along the trail.  A little rolling grade dip and outslope is enough to solve the problem

However, with another 20 minutes of effort you can have this

Rides better now

Next a corner built of powder over sticks and grass below a rocky area was falling apart due to increasing traffic.  Who'da guessed?  We saved the rocks and benched the trail into a rolling grade dip with outslope.  Reports are it rides well

Next up another turn with line and sight issues was given some plastic surgery

Our last job of the day was to make two tight tuns ride, drain and last better.  Here's how the upper one looked before

and after it was re-contoured and made into an omega turn

The corner below also needed work to adjust the entry and exit lines, plus improve drainage.  This was another narrow and fragile bit of trail.  Roots exposed over time were forcing riders out onto unstable tread.  We improved the entry line and again created a rolling grade dip on the exit in another omega turn.  Water will drain along the inside line until the rolling grade dip and then shed from the trail

Another day over.  More to be done as we head farther up Pete's, before we conect the new, lower trail segments.
