Mongrel's - Way Point 69

Sunday, 21-Oct 2012 @ 6:01pm

This job was a solo effort from Bruce.  Not all trail work is posted on the Calendar, so please be in contact, as there is always diggin' going on.

The trail audit conducted for QPWS correctly identified this site on the northern end of Mongrel's as a risk.  Recently the bridge over this seasonal creek collapsed and the rock thrown in was never going to work for long.

This is a good example of where more thoughtful trail mapping would have avoided a problem down the track.  Yes, we like riding over bridges and technical trail features, but when they start to become dangerous, how do you fix it and keep the trail open?  Better to never need to go back and work there again if possible.  Generally that means bridges should be a last resort.

In this place there was a lovely, flowing line waiting to be discovered about 10m further up the creek.  By closing the old trail and using this line, it is far less likely anyone will get hurt at this spot and it is more fun to ride.

Here are some pics:

New trail and old from the northern entrance

I wouldn't ride this - it is obviously bad for your health

A better way of passing the creek

Looking back from the southern side

This is how to cross a creek - at a low point with seasonal flow confined to a stable surface

Now you can enjoy the creek rather than headbut it.
