Petes, Friday 22nd Feb.

Friday, 22-Feb 2013 @ 9:13pm

Today I went out with Peter again. (Thank you Peter).

Here Peter is coming back from cutting off some twiggy branches at the trunk, these sort of branches could cause eye injury if left unattended. There is far more to trail work than just working on trails.

Today we decided to devote our time to repair the park itself.

We started about half way up Petes on a section that holds water during heavy rainfall. After years of use, the trail tread had become cupped (lower in the centre than on the edges).

We simply removed the outer edge of the trail to create an out-sloped trail surface for water removal.

The left over dirt and grass that was removed was reused on an old trail line directly above the area we were working in. This trail line had been closed for years, but we felt we should set aside some time to restore the hillside as best as we can.

Before we started.

And after. (we also made an effort to close the vertical corridor by pressing dead old branches upright into the soil).

Further down Petes, we also made an effort to close off another old unsued trail line.

Before.

And after. (This was done with only timber debris found localy. We were not working on anything in the area so did not have any dirt or grasses to transplant) Hopefully the timber can now collect leaf litter to aid the repair process naturaly.

We also found a number of sharp tree stumps that we felt could cause serious injury to somebody if they were to fall onto them. So we decided to break these up and remove the danger.

Before and after for the two largest ones.

Ash.
