Pete's and Brett's

Saturday, 16-Mar 2013 @ 10:04pm

We walked from the bottom of Pete's to the top of Brett's this afternoon and removed the closures from all sections but lower Pete's.  Lower Pete's remains Closed.  We added closure signs provided by QPWS to lower Pete's entrances.  Riders have been ignoring the closure, riding past the mesh fences and adding to repairs we must do to get lower Pete's up to sustainable standard

There are wet and soft areas on both trails, but most can be managed now.  Lower Pete's remains sodden below the surface and will turn to jelly and bog unless given more rest and lots of work.

Farther up Pete's the work we had done prior to the heaviest rain were doing OK apart from areas we want to re-route.  The bush is springing to life.  In a week, grasses are knee deep and lush.  Old trail closures are looking healthy, with new growth helping bind the earth.  More recent closures are also starting to see green shoots

We moved on to Brett's to work on two sites.  The first has been annoying us for some time.  Riders have created a drain on the upslope.  It funnels all water along the trail.  Here are some before and after pics from both sides

The next was a drain we added to work Bruce did in very dry times.  It had been turned into a bog by riders and even closing the trail for another month will not fix this place.  Pics again from both sides, before and after.  Also, sorry again - we finished after dark

Next inspection was of the turn where we saved most of the stones used in that drain.  We were happy to see the old trail line with healthy grass growing after we transplanted them about a month ago.  The old trail line is shown with fluoro tape

While we were happy to re-open the trails today, there are still major issues with Brett's.  We will see how things go there.  Ash and I believe major re-routing should be on the agenda for Brett's.

Tomorrow, we ride - Yippee
