More progress on Three Hills Singletrack

Monday, 07-Oct 2013 @ 8:52pm

Last trail news we had a big hangup to deal with.  Doug, being ex-UK forestry was keen to sort it.  He brought two straps and manual winches and some choke chains.  Over 30 minutes or so and using a number of different trees as anchors, the hangup was brought down.  Here's one way to hook up a choke chain

By attaching the straps to a number of trees, the hangup was pulled free from the spotted gum it was caught on

I video'd it, so no more still shots.  By dragging it way uphill with the winches, when it did fall, there was little debris on the trail, although it did still fall through the danger tape

Although hungry for metres, we went back to this spot and lowered the tread a bit to make it more secure and wider

In fact, this is one of the absolute keys to building good trail.  Going back, maybe multiple times to previous work is not evidence of bad work, but progressive trailbuilding.  Anyone who believes they can 1:  Plan the perfect trail and 2:  Build quality trail without deviating from that plan is either naiive or single minded.  Riders use like mind, not single mind to find the best line and it may differ from the plan.  Builders have to give them the opportunity.  Reviewing previous work and test riding are essential elements in quality trailwork.

After moving a log, we did make some progress in metres too

We had scrutiny while we worked

It was hard to get all the volunteers to cease working today

Let's hope next trailcare day, we have this sort of attendance
