October is Over Walk Through

Thursday, 31-Oct 2013 @ 2:03am

Before we get into the blog, Alex Douglas, MP for Gaven is requesting public feedback on the possibility that the Commonwealth Games MTB events may come to Nerang.  The decision may not be made for over 6 months.  Currently the Hinze Dam site is the official venue.

MTBtrailcare feels Nerang National Park is likely to be chosen for multiple reasons and have had discussions with GOLDOC (the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Organising Committee) and State Government.  We have been advised we will be included in the consultancy process and are very excited about that.

Today I delivered a copy of the presentation we provided GOLDOC and the State Government (Commonwealth Games management committee) to Dr Douglas' office.  We hope the Games will lead to funding for professional trail building and a bright future for MTB on the Gold Coast.

On September 1st this year, we recommenced working on Three Hills, after a year away doing other work in Region 1.  It has been dusty work since we returned.

In contrast to the last few years, it has been a very dry Winter and early Spring; although it is more likely a late Winter, Spring and probably Summer.  It feels like Spring is just starting now.   Finally, yesterday we had some rain.  Not just a few spits, but enough to flow over the ground and damp it down at least 10cm where we were working today.

Today's work is for another trail news.  This one is a walk-through from bottom to top of all the work we have done on There Hills in the last 2 months.  The rain has made drainage lines obvious, so watch for them in the pics.  Here we go starting with a bit we had left unfinished way back then, 2 months ago

The real work started from there up.  Lets walk up and stop to look back at times

Please note the drainage lines.  They are showing now there has been a rainfall

Up we go

The next pics show where we found the first network of subterrainian tunnels.  We dug the area out and replaced it with rock fill and paving stones under soil, as shown in a previous trails news.  After the rain, the stones are starting to show as predicted

Moving on up

Modifications were made to the corner by the tree, but it was too dark to get a good pic - next time

Well that was October (and September) apart from one thing.  On the way out, we discovered what seems to be a new species of tree - we call it Bananalyptus ashleii (lol); 'cause Ashley spotted it first

Should be great riding this week - and digging
