The bottom of the second hill on Three Hills

Saturday, 11-Jan 2014 @ 11:17pm

With only the top and bottom of the trail re-route to complete, this week the effort has been at the bottom.  The lower join will become a rolling contour section rather than the steep walk-in everyone has trodden in.

Doug and Ash closed that walk-in line and started making the basic, new trail line last Sunday.  They also modified the current Three Hills Trail just above the junction, building a new drain, covering deeply eroded sections and generally directing water flow into the creek line and across both the old and new trail lines, while giving the old trail a nice little buff-up.

Here's the old trail

and the closure

From above, the boys did this last weekend.  There was a huge pile of old branches and cleared debis here that was used for the access track closure.  It's odd; even knowing where that walk-in trail was, we could barely identify the old way we walked in to do trailwork at the end of today

Two large and one small grade reversals, plus a bermed (really an outsloped creek crossing) turn that includes the small reversal and part of a large one are needed to join the trail at the lower end.

Today we modified the last bit of the original trail, as we knew we would do way back when we started work here.  To ensure flow into the new section, small modifications to the upslope were required

There is also no hiding this trail anymore

There is a solid day of work to get this end completed.  Then another 1-2 days at the creek crossing up top.  Then the trail inspection by QPWS and presuming they are happy, we are go for Thunderbirds

Next report in a week or so.
