Filling in with happy digging

Sunday, 23-Mar 2014 @ 8:17pm

As any reader of our blog will know, we have recently finished a major trail work project, rerouting the Second Hill of Three Hills Single Track.
Upon completioin of this major job, MTB Trailcare put in an application to QPWS through the Gold Coast Mountain Bike Club for rerouting the lowest section of Three Hills Single Track and the ajoining section of Casuarina Grove which links through to the Main Gate at the Velodrome.

During the processing time for our request, we have had a brief chance to attend to some smaller but Important repairs.

Today we took advantage of this time away from major jobs and repaired deep erosion in a bermed corner on Happy Valley.

Before Pic showing deep erosion and extreme trail widening.

Our main focus here was to repair the erosion, give the plant life a good chance to revegetate and set the trail line back to just one predictable riding line.

For filling in the erosion and aiding revegitation, our process was to add a stone base and organic debris to give the added soil something to hold on to, then we simply kept filling with a soil/organic debris mix.

For the deepest erosion we started with larger stones and then repeated the same process of soil and organic debris.

Once the erosion had been filled we then gently banked the highest of the previous multiple trail lines and got to work on adding a grade reversal (low point) above the old erosion section.

The trail is now approx 1/3 it's original width with the deep erosion filled and a drainage low point added above to keep water from racing through the corner.

As of this weekend we have now recieved the OK to start our next Major Job. (Three Hills to Casuarina Grove link - ReRoute).

We are going to take a couple of weeks to re-familiarise ourselves with exact details of soil and contours, plus plan where we start and finish our working bees before we turn sod.

We will be hosting trailcare events again then, so if you are keen to join in and lend a hand Please check our calendar in a few weeks for exact times and locations.

We are very keen to redesign the most popular trails in the Nerang National Park MTB Trail system, rehabilitate old trail lines and make something new that offers sustainable fun right from the trailhead.

We hope you will regularly join us on our trailcare days and become a part of this process.
