A reverse grade dip with a difference

Sunday, 30-Dec 2012 @ 10:05pm

Finishing touches are not always subtle.  Today we worked a little farther downtrail and added to the divided climbing and descending lines we have been developing this week.

In the process of shaping a landing from the last jump of this trail, we excavated more dirt and stones. Our dirt pile is now about 2.5 cubiic metres.  We aren't sure whether to save it for future renovations or offer guided climbing tours!

Only another 20m of trail to go before we stop building down low, move to the top and connect through to the North Street Fire Road.  The bottom will not be finished, but going farther will make the trail too visible.  It is already too popular and there are a few days of work up top on the log ride and the last 25m before we want the public to invade.  Good chance we will find a place for some of that dirt up top or even over the other side of the fire road on the original Pete's.  Some installments of rain would also be very helpful.

Here are the pics starting from the top and moving down the trail.  You can see where the trail will head with some imagination.

From below you can see the depth of the reverse grade and the layers of soil in the upslope wall.  At the deepest point there is a clay base and above that, lots of embedded stone and a few roots.  Water is likely to run through this layer, but now it will flow out onto the reverse grade, rather than undermmine it.  We piled some excess rock below the jump as a sight line for climbing riders.  Descending riders will launch the grass we descided to save.

The yellow layer on the far right of the next pic is clay.  The base of this reverse grade should be solid in all weather.

The trail looks inviting from below
