Trail Vandalism

Friday, 01-Mar 2013 @ 7:25pm

Today Peter and I went up to do some more work on Upper-Petes. (This was going to be working towards greater trail access for every MTB rider that uses Nerang National Park).

We never left Lower-Petes as this is what we found...

Riding wet trails is Trail Vandalism, 99% of MTB riders agree that motorcycles riding our trails is a giant disrespect to the MTB community, because they damage trails that MTB riders have worked hard to have.

Motorcycle Riders do this without ever becoming involved in repairing/maintaining our trail system.

Why is it that we can see this trail abuse when it is done by others but not when it comes from within our own user group?

This is far more dammage than motorcycles cause while riding our trails in the dry & im 100% sure this dammage is not caused by the few that maintain the trails for the many, it is from trail users abusing and not maintaining our trails, and it is done on a grand scale.

So why do we accept this sort of major trail abuse from within our own rider groups?

Here are some more pics of Lower-Petes, some before and after with some drains...

This level of trail abuse comes at a giant cost, and in my eyes is not worth the extra ride time gained by riding in poor conditions.

The Cost to The MTB riders that care about trail access.

  1. Redoing trail sections pushes back our trail opening date, and so haulting increased trail access for the entire Gold Coast MTB community.
  2. This extra repair work adds even more hours to the 1000's of trailwork hours invested annualy, these hours are not 1000's of riders doing a few hours each (as it should be), it is a few riders doing 1000's of hours. (We don't need the extra work).
  3. Because of this level of trail abuse we now have a 75 year old volunteer feeling compelled to go out a few times a week to attempt to repair the damage. (This is a massive imbalance in the scales of Trail Work vs Trail Use).

If you as an MTB rider feel compelled to ride in the mud, then please stay off our trails and use the fire roads instead, and If you are too inconsiderate to do that then atleast stay off the trails we are trying to legalise, these trails are full of recent works that have not had the time to trail harden.

I'm extremely dissapointed by the dammage caused by the "all weather heros" in our riding community.

Ash.
