Planning proposal for Nerang National Park

Thursday, 19-Sep 2013 @ 12:11am

Trail News went quiet for a while recently.  This is the reason

The thumbnail makes it look small, but this document is nearly 190 pages long and about 220Mb in size.  It contains recommendations and maps for 26 trail re-routes, funding for professional trail building and hinges around the Commonwealth Games XC events in 2018 (the location of the Games MTB events has not been announced yet, but Nerang is looking like the site of choice).

Tonight Ashley and I attended the Recreation Industry Forum at Sports House in Brisbane.  We were able to present the proposal and copies of the disc to the group of senior QPWS staff, Qld Outdoor Recreation Federation, Sport and Recreation, City Councils, SEQ Water and other groups including equestrian, trail runners, 4WD, orienteers etc.

The next step is to get specific summaries to GOLDOC (Commonwealth Games organising commitee), Minister Jan Stuckey, Gold Coast City Council, MTBA, Cycling Australia and perhaps media.  It may seem to be a huge project, but we sincerely believe the Commonwealth Games, an increase in volunteering, State Government and QPWS plans increasing public access to National Parks and the rising popularity of MTB all indicate a brighter future for riders and "our park".

In preparing this document we have received very thoughtful, constructive and heartfelt advice from QORF, Gillian Duncan, SEQTA, the GC MTB Club and others.  To everyone who helped, we offer our gratitude.  It is really nice to feel part of and supported by a team of MTB (and other outdoors) allies.

Louis
